AGM or lithium: choose for the system you’re building

Rayne Automotive generally recommends AGM for lighter builds needing less than 40Ah of usable battery capacity and no inverter. If you want to run an inverter or need more usable storage, lithium is usually the better route. The point is not to buy the biggest battery: it is to size the storage alongside the loads and the ways you can recharge it.

An AGM battery’s rated Ah is not the same as the energy you would normally plan to use. As a practical planning rule, limit regular discharge to around 50% of its rated capacity. Lithium typically offers more usable capacity for the same rated Ah, but its usable amount and charging limits depend on the battery model; usually 80–100% of rated capacity is usable. Use the System Builder for a recommendation based on your own equipment rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all capacity chart.

Will it fit under a seat?

The Essentials low-height AGM range fits under many front seats, but each van and seat base is different. Measure the compartment and check the battery’s complete dimensions, terminal height, access and any seat mechanism before ordering. Some 105Ah battery arrangements can be installed on their side where that orientation is permitted for the exact model; ask Rayne Automotive to check the battery and space with you rather than assuming every 105Ah model can be mounted that way.

The dedicated 230Ah seat-base battery uses the whole seat-base space, so plan for the rest of your electrics elsewhere in the van. Larger batteries need a location outside the vehicle seats.

Upgrading from AGM to lithium?

Check that your DC-DC, solar and mains chargers have specific Lithium charging profiles. VSR relays will not be suitable. The positive battery connections also need correctly specified fuse protection, such as MRBF or T-class as appropriate to the installation. Your installer should check the battery maker’s requirements and the whole system before the changeover.

A battery on this page is a standalone battery, not a complete 12V electrical system. Confirm which cabling, protection and charging equipment your build needs separately.
