Victron Energy is the default choice for serious campervan electrical builds. Not because it's fashionable — because it works, it's backed properly, and when something goes wrong (which is rare), the support is there. We're a Victron-trained dealer. We install this equipment every week. This is the honest version.
The Products You Actually Need
Orion DC-DC Charger
The Victron Orion range is the most commonly asked-about product we sell — and for good reason. It's the component most people haven't considered until they start researching their build, but almost every build needs one.
A DC-DC charger takes power from your vehicle's alternator and converts it into a controlled charge for your leisure battery. Without one, you're either not charging from the alternator at all, or you're using a split charge relay — which works for AGM batteries on vehicles without a smart alternator, but is damaging to lithium batteries and inefficient for both.
The Orion XS is the current high-current option — isolated, smart, and designed for lithium and larger AGM systems. The Orion Tr-Smart in 18A and 30A versions are equally strong choices for many builds. The right one comes down to sizing — how much charge current your battery needs based on capacity and how much driving you do. The System Builder will specify the correct unit for your setup.
SmartSolar MPPT
The Victron SmartSolar range is the solar charge controller we fit to most builds. MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) controllers extract more energy from your panels than PWM controllers — typically 20–30% more in real-world conditions.
One question that comes up regularly with the 10A and 15A SmartSolar units: should I use the load terminals? In most campervan installs, the answer is no. The load terminals are designed for direct loads like lighting in off-grid cabins. In a van where loads run through a fuse box with its own over-discharge protection, you connect your loads separately and use the MPPT purely for battery charging.
The SmartSolar connects to the Victron ecosystem via Bluetooth and VE.Direct — monitor everything through the Victron Connect app, or through a Cerbo GX touchscreen if you're running a more comprehensive system.
Multiplus Inverter/Charger
The Victron Multiplus is an inverter, a battery charger and a transfer switch in a single unit. When you're on hook-up, it charges your batteries and passes mains power through to your sockets — so you use the same sockets off-grid and on hook-up. When you're off-grid, it inverts your DC battery power to 230V AC.
It's a low-frequency inverter — which matters. Low-frequency designs handle surge loads (kettles, air fryers, power tools starting up) far better than high-frequency units of the same rated wattage. A Victron Multiplus 1600VA will run loads that a 2000W high-frequency inverter from another brand struggles with.
The PowerAssist feature is worth understanding if you're on hook-up. When your site supply is limited — say a 6A pitch — the Multiplus can supplement it with battery power, allowing you to run loads that would otherwise trip the hook-up breaker. You set the input current limit; the Multiplus manages the rest.
Cerbo GX
If you're running multiple Victron components, the Cerbo GX ties them together. It monitors your solar, DC-DC charger, Multiplus and battery state in a single display. With the GX Touch 50 screen, you get a permanent dashboard on the wall of your van showing every key metric in real time.
Not essential for simpler builds. On a system with solar, DC-DC charging and mains hook-up, the visibility is worth it.
The Mistakes We See
Wrong circuit protection on the Multiplus
The most common installation mistake we see with Multiplus installs is incorrect circuit protection on the DC side — specifically, the wrong fuse type in the wrong position.
For lithium battery systems, you need a T-class fuse or MRBF fuse as close to the battery terminals as possible. A standard automotive fuse or regular DC circuit breaker is not sufficient. Lithium batteries can deliver enormous fault currents; if your protection doesn't respond fast enough, the consequences are serious. It's worth buying a spare MRBF or T-class fuse at the same time as your Multiplus.
We supply cable kits with all our Victron installations, which include the correct fusing for the specific unit. This is one reason we don't see many errors from our own customers. Where we do see problems is when someone has sourced components separately and substituted a cheaper fuse because it looked similar.
Poor earth connections
The single most common cause of Victron equipment behaving unexpectedly isn't the Victron component — it's the earth. A poor earth on any part of the system creates voltage drop, interference and unpredictable behaviour that can look like a component fault.
If a Victron unit is behaving strangely, check your earths before anything else. Every connection in your earth path needs to be clean, tight and correctly sized — battery negative, chassis earth, component earths and any bonding between system elements.
Why Victron and Not a Cheaper Alternative
This is a fair question. Here's the honest answer.
It doesn't break
Victron equipment has an exceptionally low failure rate. In a van — often in remote locations, variable temperatures, variable power inputs — equipment that fails when you need it most is not a bargain regardless of what it cost.
The product range is complete
Every Victron component is designed to work with every other. SmartSolar, Multiplus and Orion all talk to the Cerbo GX. One interface, one app, one source of truth. Mixed brands mean multiple apps and no unified system view.
Outstanding support and warranty
Victron has a network of trained dealers and genuine technical support. Their documentation is comprehensive, firmware is regularly updated, and genuine component faults are dealt with properly. Cheaper brands often have limited UK support and limited warranty recourse.
Raw quality
The materials, tolerances and thermal management are built to a standard cheaper alternatives don't match. A Victron Multiplus installed in 2015 is still running in vans today. Their stuff really doesn't break.
Choosing the Right Victron Setup
The right combination is a two-axis decision. The first axis is what you want to run — specifically, do you need 240V off-grid, and how much visibility do you want over your system? Those two questions set your core components.
Everything else — battery capacity, solar wattage — scales independently based on how long you're away and how much you use. Trip length and daily consumption are a sizing question, not a specification question.
SmartSolar MPPT + Orion DC-DC charger + leisure battery
No Multiplus required if you're not running 240V loads off-grid. Monitor via the Victron Connect app over Bluetooth — free, works well for a simpler system. Choose the Orion 18A for lighter use, the Orion XS for higher charge rates.
SmartSolar + Orion XS + Multiplus + Cerbo GX
Add a Multiplus sized to your largest anticipated load — remembering that the low-frequency design handles surge loads better than the wattage rating implies. Add a Cerbo GX with GX Touch 50 if you want a permanent dashboard showing solar input, state of charge, charge rates and load all in one place.
Pre-wired power board — all of the above, pre-mounted and tested
The same Victron components — Multiplus, SmartSolar, Orion XS and Cerbo GX — pre-mounted on modular boards (12V, solar, mains), fully wired, every connection labelled, tested before dispatch. The monitoring capability is identical. The install is faster, cleaner and you're not building from scratch.
