Quick answer: what leisure battery charger do I need?

Match the charger to your battery type first, then to its size. If you have an AGM leisure battery, any Victron Blue Smart charger with an AGM preset will charge it correctly and keep it healthy. If you have a lithium battery, choose a charger with a lithium profile. For size, allow roughly 10–15% of your battery's Ah capacity in charging amps — so a 110Ah battery wants a 10–15A charger.

AGM vs lithium: the one distinction that matters

AGM batteries want a staged charge — bulk, absorption and float — with the absorption stage held at the right voltage. Lithium batteries charge differently: they take current almost constantly and then stop, and they need a lithium-specific profile to do it safely. Both profiles preserve your battery's warranty, because the charger is working to the voltages the battery was designed for.

Every Victron Blue Smart charger carries presets for both battery types. You pick the right profile once in the app and the charger handles the rest — no manual voltage settings.

Caring for the battery correctly is the other half of the picture. We cover that in depth in two guides:

Every board and system we sell is built around correct charging — these are the mains chargers we use ourselves. All four Blue Smart units have AGM and lithium presets, and Bluetooth monitoring from your phone.

What size charger do I need?

Rule of thumb: charging amps should sit around 10–15% of your battery's Ah capacity. That's fast enough to recover the battery in a practical time, without overworking it.

A worked example: a 110Ah AGM battery × 10–15% = an 11–16.5A range. So the 10A or 15A Blue Smart is the right match — the 10A if you mostly top up between trips, the 15A if you want faster recovery.

Lithium batteries accept charge faster, so if you're running lithium you can lean towards the higher end of that range, and your battery's charge-rate limit is worth checking before sizing up. Bigger isn't automatically better: match the charger to the battery, not to the catalogue's largest unit.

Charging while you drive: the split-charge crossover

A mains charger only works when you're plugged in. The other half of the picture is a DC-DC charger, which charges your leisure battery from the alternator while you drive — the CTEK D250SE and the Victron Orion range both do this job, and they're covered in our split charge and DC-DC charger kits. Many campervans end up with both: a DC-DC charger for the road, a mains charger for the driveway.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a normal car battery charger on a leisure battery?

You can connect one, but it's not what leisure batteries want. Basic automotive chargers push a fixed charge and cut off on a timer — they don't run the staged absorption profile an AGM battery is designed for, and they have no lithium setting at all. A purpose-made leisure battery charger with AGM and lithium presets charges to the profile your battery expects, which protects both the battery and its warranty.

Do I need a different charger for lithium leisure batteries?

Yes. Lithium batteries need a lithium charging profile: a different voltage curve, and no long float stage. The good news is you don't need a special charger to get it — every Victron Blue Smart unit in the range has a lithium preset, selected once in the app. If you might switch to lithium later, buying a charger with both profiles now saves buying twice.

How long does it take to charge a leisure battery?

Divide capacity by charging amps, then add roughly a quarter for the absorption stage. A 110Ah battery on a 15A charger reaches full in around nine to ten hours; on a 7A charger, expect closer to twenty. In practice most people don't charge from empty — the charger tops the battery up between trips, which takes a fraction of that.

Can I leave a leisure battery on charge all winter?

With a smart charger, yes. AGM presets finish with a float stage that holds the battery full without overcharging it — so a Blue Smart on an AGM battery can stay connected for months, which is exactly how we recommend storing batteries over winter. For lithium, the profile stops charging at full, so there's nothing to overcharge. A periodic check that everything is clean and connected is still good practice.

What's the best leisure battery charger for a campervan?

Whichever Blue Smart matches your battery size: the 10A or 15A suits most 100–125Ah builds, the 7A is right for smaller batteries, and the 20A suits bigger banks or permanent indoor fitting. If your van has a mains hook-up and you also want off-grid 230V, the MultiPlus does the charging and the inverting in one box. Still weighing it up?
