The Basics

What Does a Campervan Electrical System Actually Do?

If you want lights, a fridge, phone charging, a coffee machine, or any real comfort when you're parked up โ€” you need a dedicated 12V electrical system. It's completely separate from your van's starter battery and engine electrics.

The principle is simple: you store energy in a leisure battery, charge it from your van's alternator while driving, from solar panels while parked, or from a mains hook-up on site. Then draw from it to run your appliances โ€” 12V directly, or 240V via an inverter.

The complexity comes from sizing it correctly, wiring it safely, and making sure everything works together. That's where we come in.

Three Questions That Determine Your Entire System

Before you look at a single product, answer these three questions. They determine everything โ€” battery size, cable ratings, inverter type, and total cost.

02

What will you run?

The appliances you want to use dictate your battery capacity, cable sizing, and whether you need an inverter for 240V.

12V only (lights, USB, fridge) โ†’ simple system
Laptop, TV, small devices โ†’ basic inverter
Kettle, electric cooking โ†’ Victron Multiplus
Full off-grid living โ†’ complete power board
01

How will you power it?

Your charging sources determine how quickly you replenish energy and how independent you can be from the grid.

Alternator (split charge) โ€” charges while driving
Solar panels โ€” free energy when parked
Mains hook-up โ€” reliable on campsites
Combination โ€” the most versatile option
03

What's your budget?

There's a system for every budget. The jump from basic to a complete pre-wired board is smaller than most people expect โ€” and the difference in quality is enormous.

Entry level โ€” from ~ยฃ200
Mid-range, no off-grid 240V โ€” ยฃ600โ€“ยฃ1,500
Complete off-grid system, 2000VA โ€” from ยฃ2,000
Fully wired, 3000VA+, 628Ah lithium โ€” ยฃ3,000+

Quick Reference: Which System for Your Trips?

Match your typical van life pattern to the right setup.

Trip Type Charging Sources Battery Type Our Recommendation
Mostly campsites, short trips Mains hook-up + alternator AGM leisure battery Simple systems without inverters
Mix of sites & wild camping โ€” still no 240V off-grid Solar + alternator Lithium recommended Simple systems without inverters โ€” solar and bigger battery added
Extended off-grid adventures Solar + alternator + mains Lithium recommended Now adding an inverter โ€” Pre-Wired Power Board
Full-time van life / electric cooking Solar + Victron Multiplus + alternator Lithium essential Victron Power Board System + 2000/3000VA inverter

Charging Your System

Solar, Mains & Alternator Charging

Most serious builds use two or all three. Understanding when each source is active โ€” and how much it contributes โ€” is key to sizing your battery correctly.

โ˜€๏ธ

Solar Panels

Charge energy whenever there's daylight. Essential for extended trips, wild camping, and reducing campsite dependency. Flexible or rigid panels available.

Off-grid Essential

๐Ÿ”Œ

Mains Hook-Up (EHU)

Connect to campsite power for reliable, unlimited charging. Ideal for winter van life, electric cooking, and site-based trips. Requires a mains hook-up kit โ€” if you only want mains on campsites, you don't need an inverter, just a battery charger.

๐Ÿš

Split Charge (Alternator)

Charges your leisure battery automatically while you're driving. Every build should have one. Modern DC-DC chargers (like the Victron Orion Tr or XS range) are required for modern vans and/or lithium leisure batteries.

Which Victron products do our customers choose most?

The two most popular Victron products in our builds are the Orion DC-DC chargers (for smart alternator charging) and the SmartSolar MPPT controllers (for solar). Both are included in our pre-wired power board systems. For complete off-grid builds with 240V capability, the Victron Multiplus inverter-charger is the gold standard.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Entry-level basic kits start from around ยฃ200 for a simple VSR split charge setup and 12V-only wiring. A mid-range custom wiring kit covering 12V, solar, and mains typically costs ยฃ600โ€“ยฃ1,500. A full pre-wired power board system with inverters capable of running air fryers or induction hobs starts from around ยฃ2,300 and can reach ยฃ4,000+ for a complete Victron Multiplus and lithium setup with Cerbo GX and a week's off-grid power. The cost is almost always less than people expect for what you get.
Whilst 12V electrical systems don't legally require a qualified electrician, our custom wiring kits and pre-wired power boards are designed for competent self-installers and come with full installation guides โ€” we would always recommend these are checked by an electrician too. Safety is an utmost priority for electrical systems. The 240V mains hook-up element of a system should be treated with respect โ€” always ensure circuits are correctly protected and terminated. If in doubt, our team is happy to advise or you can book a consultation.
It depends entirely on your appliances and how long you want to run them without charging. A weekend van with a fridge and lights might be comfortable with a 105Ah battery. A full-time off-grid build with electric cooking will need 230Ah+ of lithium. The quickest way to calculate exactly what you need is our free Electrical System Builder.
Not always โ€” but for most builds, solar is beneficial. If you mostly use campsites with EHU, you should be fine with mains hook-up and alternator charging alone. But for wild camping beyond weekend trips, or any extended off-grid use, solar is the most practical passive way to keep your battery topped up. Even 130โ€“190W of solar makes a significant difference.
A wiring kit supplies all the pre-terminated cables, fuses, and components you need โ€” but they are of a generic length, less customised and not designed for any specific layout within your electrics cupboard. A pre-wired power board comes fully assembled: all components are mounted onto a board, wired with correctly-sized cables, and bench-tested before it leaves our workshop. You simply mount the board and connect your battery, solar, and alternator. It's the difference between building from parts and plugging in a complete unit. Read our full comparison guide โ†’
Yes โ€” our modular pre-wired mains power boards are designed to work alongside an existing 12V setup. The Victron Multiplus inverter-charger handles both mains hook-up charging and 240V inverter output in a single unit. It's one of the most popular upgrades for van conversions that started with a basic system. See mains hook-up kits โ†’
